A Great Get Together in Nottingham

As part of the Great Get Together Weekend in memory of MP Jo Cox, who was brutally murdered on June 16th last year, SMÖØ¿Ú recently held a collective women’s community iftar in conjunction with Nottingham Muslim Women’s Network.

The event was held in the Conference Hall at SMÖØ¿Ú head office in Nottingham and was open for all local women to attend in order to commemorate the work of Jo Cox and remember her key - now infamous - message:

‘We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us.’

Whilst the event brought together members of various communities during the month of Ramadan, as a ladies-only evening, it also advocated and celebrated women’s empowerment and the key role women play in society today.

Alhamudlillah, the evening was a great success. The event was attended by women from all walks of life and over 80 key members of the local community. Speeches and presentations were made by a range of guests including Lillian Greenwood MP, Deputy Chief Inspector Rachel Barber, Grace Moronflou from the Crown Prosecution Service, and a number of councillors and ex-police inspectors, followed by wonderful entertainment, including nasheed performances and Qur’anic recitation.

Following recent events in London and Manchester, the Great Get Together could not have come at aÌý²ú±ð³Ù³Ù±ð°ùÌý³Ù¾±³¾±ð.ÌýThe evening wasÌý²¹ÌýpowerfulÌýreminder that we really do have more in commonÌýand that it’sÌýmore important than ever for communities to come together:Ìý

‘The cause that Jo Cox stood for is what we have to hold on to. She wanted people to come together and spread unity and we need to keep that alive.ÌýThis is the way we have to respond to people who carry out barbaric attacks.’Ìý(RizwanÌýAraf,ÌýMHÌýAdministrationÌýManager)Ìý

As the blessed month of Ramadan has now drawn to a close,ÌýSMÖØ¿Ú willÌýcontinueÌýworking to maintainÌýthis sense ofÌýunity within our local communities and voice Jo’sÌýcrucialÌýmessage.ÌýÌý
